My Family
On this page I will eventually develop my Family Tree from Melness. I should say at the outset that I am not a genealogist and my interest is in Social History so this site will not carry much genealogy information. The photograph shows four generations of the Morrisons from Talmine. I am sitting on my Great Grandmothers lap - she was called Janet, but I called her Nikka. Then there is my Granny - Jane and my Father Jimmy Robert. The photograph was taken in 1949 - a few months after I was born. In the back ground you can just see the pier. On a larger image you can make out the Post Office.
The synopsis of the family that I have so far - courtesy of Mrs Mary Young and extracted from the Late Hugh Macdonalds Family list of Melness - is as follows:
Grace Macleod, (Giorsal Campbell) a daughter of James Macleod, stayed in the fourth house - Cornhill.
Grace married Donald Campbell (b 1827) from Durness and had two daughters, Anne (b 1865), who married in Kinlochbervie, and Janet (b 1857), who married Robert, son of John Mackay (Gedder) and Jane Ross from Lower Talmine.
Janet and Robert had a daughter Jane, who married John Morrison from Talmine, the son of Thomas Morrison. Jane and John had a son, Thomas - now deceased, who was a Company Sergeant Major in the second world war and was awarded the DCM. Thomas joined the Metropolitan Police and rose to the rank of Superintendent.
John and Jane's second son, James Robert - now deceased, was in the Royal Air Force during the second war. He married Iseabal Macdonald from Tiree and settled in Golspie - she is now almost 92 and living in Linlithgow.
I am also interested in The Napier Commission hearing at Bettyhill in 1884 and in particular the treatment of a Thomas Morrison Talmine - is there any link to my family of Morrisons. If you have any of these in your family tree and can help me fill out some more information I would be grateful.
