Photo Slideshow of Talmine Pier Slate Works and Portvasgo Flagstone Strata
Melness Pier Slate and Portvasgo Flagstone
The following photos are of Talmine Pier where slate quarrying was carried out for many years. The last time that slate was quarried in Talmine was in the early 1920's when the quarry was re-opened to re-roof Dunrobin Castle, Golspie after the disastrous fire in 1915. The first photos of the slideshow show the remains of slate cuttings at the back of the Talmine Pier and some of the rock strata further along from the pier on the coast walk to PortVasgo. This is followed by a few photos of Portvasgo and the rock strata where the flagstones were taken from. This is just a temporary slideshow until I can get some more detailed photos and Video. There was also a small slate quarry at Skinnet which is now filled in. Iain.
